Jeaniene Frost may be a relatively new author with only one series, spanning three books so far, to her name, but her readers and even other authors will tell you that she is more than welcome in the urban fantasy genre.  I have been hooked from the first book, Halfway to the Grave, because her hero is so different from the regular alpha male vampire.  Bones may be one of the "top dogs", but he rarely acts like it except when the situation calls for it.  Actually most of her vampires seem to act this way which sets Mrs. Frost apart from the pack I think.  Look for more from Jeaniene Frost in the Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance (out in mid-April) and An Early Grave (out at the end of July), the fourth Night Huntress novel.

Cat Crawfield, the Red Reaper if you happen to be a rogue vampire, finally has everything going her way, or at least it starts out that way.  Her vampire boyfriend, Bones, is by her side and has made it clear that's where he plans to stay.  What she doesn't need is one of her best friends continually trying to come between her and Bones, even going so far as to become a vampire himself.  Things go bad pretty fast once Cat visits her mom only to ambushed, tortured, and all but left for dead by her father.  He had some pretty powerful backers and they've made it damn clear that they want Cat dead.  Bones will never let that happen of course, and Mencheres offers a permanent alliance between their bloodlines for his own unknown reasons.  Shortly after this alliance things go from bad to worse and as all out vampire war ensues, and then the zombies show up.  Just how does a secret government organization cover up the fact that graveyards in a 100 mile radius are emptying out all at once?

The next book should be pretty interesting considering all the fallout that will have to be dealt with.  Also, Cat and her mother go through some pretty big changes in this book and make some life-changing decisions towards the end so that will be interesting to watch play out as well.  I think it's time for some press fallout too, especially after this book where Cat and a crowd of people are caught on camera yelling about vampires.  I think it's high time there was some sort of leak to the masses that, yes, vampires do exist.  Cat and her team raid a different bar or night club almost every night and you're trying to tell me that no one has managed to sneak out the back and keep their memories of a vampire attack?  If you're tired of the he-man, alpha vampires and looking for plenty of action I highly recommend this series.

  1. Great review!

And I agree. I'm hoping there is some fallout and vamps are exposed. That would be really interesting to see play out!

I love this series. It's funny and it's intriguing. Gets you hooked like crazy! I definitely recommend it.
